Dimethicone

Occlusive / Emollient

INCI: Dimethicone

Also known as: Polydimethylsiloxane, a silicone

A silicone that forms a light, breathable protective film with a strong safety record.

What it is

Dimethicone is a silicone-based polymer (polydimethylsiloxane) used widely in skincare. It sits on the skin as a light, smooth, semi-permeable film.

Function

Dimethicone functions as an occlusive and emollient. It reduces moisture loss by forming a protective layer, but that layer is lighter and more breathable than petroleum jelly, and it gives products a smooth, non-greasy slip.

Properties

Dimethicone is non-comedogenic, non-irritating for most people and has a well-established safety record in cosmetic use. It is not absorbed into the skin.

In tattoo aftercare

Dimethicone appears in some barrier creams and moisturisers used on tattoos as a supporting occlusive that reduces water loss without the heaviness of petrolatum.

Considerations

Generally well tolerated. It is a supporting barrier ingredient rather than an active, and there are no notable concerns for most users.
