Coconut oil
EmollientINCI: Cocos Nucifera Oil
Also known as: Copra oil
A popular natural oil that moisturises well but carries a high comedogenic rating.
What it is
Coconut oil is a plant oil extracted from the kernels of the coconut fruit (Cocos nucifera). It is rich in saturated fatty acids, with lauric acid making up the majority, and is solid at cooler temperatures.
Function
Coconut oil functions as an emollient, softening and conditioning skin and helping reduce moisture loss. Fractionated coconut oil (caprylic/capric triglyceride) is a lighter, liquid derivative used in many formulations.
Properties
Whole coconut oil carries a comedogenic rating of around 4, meaning a higher likelihood of clogging pores, and it is low in linoleic acid, which is associated with pore congestion in acne-prone skin. It is generally well tolerated by those whose skin suits it.
In tattoo aftercare
Coconut oil and its fractionated form appear in a number of tattoo aftercare products as a moisturising base. Whether it suits fresh-tattoo use varies with skin type, and it is often better tolerated on healed skin.
Considerations
The higher comedogenic rating makes it less predictable on congestion-prone skin. Those unsure of how their skin responds may prefer a purpose-built cream during active healing.
